Always getting ready
Watch this week's reflection · 2:42
This week I've been thinking about the biggest parts of us. The work we're actually here to do, the truth we carry, the love we're built to give. And how easily we file it under later. After the promotion. After the kids are grown. After we retire. As if the fullest version of our lives were something we only get to once the conditions finally clear.
There's a line from Seneca that reminds me of our human responsibility to take the next best step. He's writing to a friend about the fears we invent, and he says the fool “is always getting ready to live.” Not failing to live. Getting ready to. Forever assembling the conditions, waiting for the right canvas, the clearer week, someone else to go first. The waiting can feel responsible. It can even feel humble. But he's naming the one thing folly can't see about itself. The readiness was never the doorway. It was the delay dressed up as preparation.
There's something you already know you're here to make. You've heard it, maybe for years. Bringing it into the world is among the most human things you'll ever do, and it's yours to do now. So this week, when the reason arrives for why the time isn't right, notice it, and hold it up to the light.
Is it a real wall? Or is it the readiness that never runs out, the one that will still be here next month wearing a different face?
The next real step almost never arrives feeling like the right time. What if that was never the reason to wait? Let's take the next best step together. Our world needs your humanity.
